Proposal: Australian Antarctic Division, Hobart.
A monumental sculpture celebrating the achievements of Dr Mawson, B.E.S. Ninnis and Dr X Mertz.
The physically dominating arched and “S” curved form is designed to evoke this tortuous heroic journey and the magnitude of the undertaking. The eerie landscape as an almost insurmountable stretch of angular shafts of broken ice, is reflected and portrayed in the sharp foreboding shapes that crash and collide into each other defying all attempts to cross them.
To be constructed in stainless steel sheet, sand blasted, 2011
10 x 2.5 x 1.2 m
